“Women like three things: Men in kilts, Southern Comfort, and Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game‘.”- Flight of the Conchords
This is fact. Period. Don’t start shaking your head, don’t deny it. Don’t fight it. CHRIS ISAAK. For reals. Yes, I don’t care what anyone says, or the number of coworkers making fun of me on the bus (for the record it was 5), I love Chris Isaak. And I LOVE this album. I massively regret missing him play last fall at Massey Hall in Toronto.
There’s something about Chris Isaak’s voice that absolutely melts me and makes me stop whatever I’m doing. I don’t know why or where this stems from, it’s just an immutable fact.
We were wandering around Greenwich Village during Thanksgiving and hitting up all the record stores in the area, including popping into Gimme Gimme Records (which according to Yelp has since relocated to Los Angeles!)
And that’s when it happened…
Ok, well really Jeff just found a copy of Heart Shaped World in a vinyl crate and held it up for me to see in the store. BUT he may as well have morphed into Chris Isaak floating around in a bunch of clouds for all I cared.
And $10?!? Bargin. SOLD.
Released in 1989, It wasn’t until Wicked Game was featured in the soundtrack for David Lynch’s film “Wild at Heart” that the album Heart Shaped World really gained notice.
On a side note Chris Isaak would later go on to play Agent Chester Desmond in “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me“. See, here he is looking all sultry Agent Chester like:
Heart Shaped World is a solid album, the rest of it often overshadowed by the success of Wicked Game, and I’ll admit I’m as guilty as the next for focusing on that one song so much as well. But man, it’s a good one.
The music video for Wicked Game featuring Helena Christensen and Chris Isaak frolicking in the ocean is pretty well known, so for something a bit different below is the version directed by David Lynch.
